Georg Rueter (Haarlem, 1875 – Amsterdam, 1966) was a versatile Dutch artist: painter, draftsman, portraitist, book cover designer and monumental designer. He belongs to the generation that marks the transition from the late 19th century tradition to a more modern, stylized formal language, in which craftsmanship, aesthetics and functionality went hand in hand. His work is characterized by a refined sense of color, a strong decorative streak and a balanced composition.

Rueter was trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where he was influenced by the symbolist and impressionist movements of his time. He made a name for himself with portraits of literary and cultural figures, but also with floral still lifes, interiors and murals. His style remained figurative and harmonious, often with a soft touch and an eye for detail, which made him a much sought-after portrait painter in circles of the cultural elite.

In addition to his free work, Rueter was also very active as a graphic designer and illustrator. For publisher Van Loghum Slaterus he designed numerous book covers, posters and typographic elements, in which he incorporated a clear influence of the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements. He was also involved in monumental projects, including murals and designs for stained glass windows, which underlines his broad artistic range.

Although he continued to paint and design throughout his life, Rueter always stood somewhat at a distance from the avant-garde. His work is contemplative rather than revolutionary, elegant rather than expressive. Nevertheless, he is considered an important figure in Dutch art around 1900, especially because of his contribution to the integration of art and applied design. Georg Rueter leaves behind a stylish and richly varied oeuvre that balances craftsmanship and imagination.
