About the artist
Lodewijk Frederik Hendrik (Louis) Apol (1850–1936) was a great example of the Hague School, which was used to create an atmospheric winter landscape. Born in The Hague, he was developed within the tradition of the realistic landscape, so he had a great experience of his own invulling.
Apol vond zijn greatest inspiration in snowy bosses, bevroren sloten en stille winterdagen, waarin menselijke aanwezigheid vaak tot a minimum will be brought forward. These pictures are rustic and contemplative, with a shearing effect on the light valley, structured with subtle effects of white, gray and blue. What we have to say about the Dutch polderland, the Apol is right for the sea, with an intimate natural setting.
The observations were made in other countries in Scandinavia, which is the northernmost winter light population. The experience reinforced the power of the kou, stilte en ruimte tactile te maken op het doek. This work balances its natural beauty with a poetic stilling.
Louis Apol wordt gezien als een meester in het vangen van de essentie van de winter: niet alleen als seizoen, maar als stemming—ingetogen, helder en tijdloos.
