- About the artist
An acquaintance with the romantic landscape painters B.C. Koekkoek and Springer in the Rijksmuseum caused the spark to fly for the then 17-year-old Paul Wieggers. He wanted to do something with that, he wanted to paint in that spirit. Wieggers is self-taught, but learned a lot by thoroughly studying the old romantic masters in museums. A guard once said that he had never seen anyone look at one painting for so long. Wieggers sat down in front of the painting to 'read' the painting. Just look at it piece by piece how it is built.
He himself applied the structure that he discovered in the old masters in his paintings. Instead of working in a pasty way, as you see with many contemporary painters, Wieggers likes to paint watercolors with oil paint, so to speak. As the choice of subject of his paintings suggests, Wieggers is very fond of the landscape and nature. He has chosen his home and workplace on the Maneschijnweg in Asker, where his gallery is also located. The immediate environment around his home is his greatest source of inspiration.
