  • About the artist

Richard van Mensvoort (born 1972) creates realistic impressionist oil paintings depicting people, animals, and the environment, in which his interest in light and atmosphere is remarkable.
As a modern impressionist, he captures everyday life in oil paint.

An ambitious autodidact, a master of self-study. A great admirer of artists such as John Singer Sargent, Isaac Israels, Joaquin Sorolla, Pieter Pander, and Hans Bayens. An avid museum and gallery visitor (not limited to the Netherlands), he is usually found in his studio.

He lives and works in picturesque Megen but draws inspiration from all corners of the globe.

As a child, he was always found with a sketchbook under his arm. He studied advertising and presentation techniques to start working as a visualizer at an advertising agency. He became restless, and after months of backpacking around the world, he discovered that painting was his calling.

To truly experience the city (or the landscape), painter Richard van Mensvoort goes out with his camera. Often on foot, he takes snapshots of his surroundings. A street, a canal, a park, a tree. In his studio, he processes these photos and his memories into the basis for his oil paintings.
