    Dit olieverfwerk van de autodidactische Amsterdamse schilder Evert Jan Ligtelijn brengt de serene ambiance van de stad tot leven. De Magere Brug, met haar kenmerkende dubbele klap en negen doorvaarten tussen Kerkstraat en Nieuwe Kerkstraat, domineert het tafereel, omringd door weelderige bomen en een kade vol kratten en boten. In de verte doemt de Zuiderkerk op tegen een diffuse blauwe hemel, terwijl warme zonreflecties dansen op het kalme water. Ligtelijns losse penseelstreken in aardetinten en zachte lichteffecten roepen een vredige, vroeg-20e-eeuwse sfeer op langs de Amstel. De compositie vangt perfect de essentie van Amsterdams grachtenleven: industrieel doch poëtisch, met schaduwen en highlights die diepte en beweging suggereren. Dit originele werk, typerend voor zijn specialisatie in stadsgezichten, ademt de charme van het interbellums Amsterdam.
  • About the artist

    Evert Jan Ligtelijn was born in 1893 in the city of Amsterdam. His living and working situations were concentrated in and around the cities of Amsterdam, Naarden and Amstelveen. In addition to this he was known to travel often; his travels to the Canary Islands and South and Central America are examples of this.

    The subjects of his work tend to vary from Mediterranean scenes to cityscapes, such as those of Amsterdam. His depictions of river views of the Vecht river are in high demand as well. Particularly in these cityscapes-in atmospheres of both summer and winter- a recognizable smooth way of working stands out.

    During a period of stay in the city of Bergen, the Netherlands, he worked with Harrie Kuyten, with whom he became friends. Ligtelijn was known as a lifelong friend of painter Nico Bruijnestein as well.

    Ligtelijn passed awat in Laren, 1975.
