  • About the artist

Chris Herenius (born 1943) is a painter whose work is known for a tranquil, timeless, and above all, delicate atmosphere. His still lifes are sublime in their simplicity and evoke an almost meditative tranquility. Fascinated by small, refined, and often fragile objects, he creates carefully considered compositions in which every detail is imbued with meaning. Fragile feathers, insects, withered leaves, crumpled pieces of paper, or an old, crackled bowl are depicted in isolation and subtly arranged, inviting the viewer to contemplate.

For Herenius, depicting the expression of texture is both a challenge and an opportunity to reveal the beauty of the everyday: the velvety feathers of a dead bird, the transparency of a withered leaf, the fragile sheen of a porcelain bowl. Everything exudes care and love for the subject, as well as mastery of technique.

As a former painting instructor at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, Herenius is unparalleled in his mastery of the diverse techniques of painting. He adapts each type of paint to its desired texture and appearance. For him, the choice of paint is self-evident, but for the viewer it can sometimes be confusing: can oil paint really look so transparent, or watercolor so powdery?

His still lifes demonstrate that this is possible. They are masterful paintings that literally and figuratively make us pause—to reflect on the beauty of small things, on transience, and on the peace that art can bring.
