- About the artist
Augustina Droze (born 1981) is an American contemporary artist whose work spans painting and installation and is distinguished by a rich, symbolic visual language. She frequently employs animals as narrative figures, using them as stand-ins to explore personal experience, identity, and emotional states. Through these symbolic protagonists, Droze examines themes of displacement, motherhood, and cultural duality.
Having lived and worked in Beijing for over a decade, Augustina Droze draws deeply from her experience as a foreigner in China. Her work reflects a world that is simultaneously exotic, beautiful, and disorienting, shaped by the tension between familiarity and estrangement. This cross-cultural perspective is central to her practice, as she consciously fuses Eastern and Western visual traditions into a highly expressive, contemporary aesthetic.
Droze’s paintings and installations are marked by a sense of Rococo-inspired abundance: lush compositions, ornamental detail, and vibrant color palettes that create immersive, almost theatrical environments. These visually dense works function as a form of modern mythology—dreamlike landscapes populated by animals, symbols, and surreal elements that coexist in states of harmony and contradiction.
Through this layered approach, Augustina Droze creates work that is both intimate and expansive. Her art invites viewers into a psychologically charged world where personal narrative, cultural observation, and imaginative storytelling intersect, positioning her as a distinctive voice in contemporary figurative and symbolic art.
