  • About the artist

Bob Buys was a born painter, as they say, and can be counted among the figuratives and colorists. Marquet, Matisse and Bonnard were initially his role models. At the end of the forties he abandoned late impressionism for a grander structure of the surfaces and a more continuous effect of the line.

He painted and watercolored portraits, interiors, landscapes, harbor and city views. Bob Buys worked a lot in Amsterdam, Paris and from the 1950s in Brittany, but especially in the south of France (Port Vendres) where he was attracted to the brilliance of the color.

His compositions are surprising and often have a spatial effect. In addition, he looks for simplicity of means and constructive solidity. In the 1960s he managed to increase the color even more to the point of adventure. Ultimately, it results in passionate work that simultaneously evokes an atmosphere of beneficial tranquility. His paintings testify to a warm joy of painting and great craftsmanship.

In addition to being a painter, Bob Buys was a born watercolourist, who knew how to exploit all the advantages of watercolour. It keeps its leaves transparent without losing any of their strength in shape and color. In 1945 Bob Buys was co-founder of the Dutch Aquarelists Circle.

In art history, attention mainly focuses on the artists who fulfilled a vanguard role. As a result, many artists have not received the attention they deserve.

It is gratifying to see that in recent years there has been a reappraisal of a group of painters who worked in the first half of the 20th century and who each in their own way responded to the many new movements that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. in painting have responded. Bob Buys occupies a prominent place in the Netherlands.
