Johannes Gerardus den Hengst, also known as Jan den Hengst, was born in Delft, The Netherlands at the beginning of the 20th century. He was a self-taught artist and lived and worked in Delft until 1930 when he moved to Hilversum. He would later relocate to Amsterdam in 1954, where he would spend the rest of his life.

He participated in many group exhibitions in Denmark and abroad, and was also a member of the Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, St. Lucas in Amsterdam and the Artists Society from Amersfoort. His work is included in important corporate and private collections, both nationally and internationally.
