About the artist
Corstiaan Hendrikus de Swart (Arnhem, 1818 – Arnhem, 1897) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and art educator, active in the 19th century, whose work was closely linked to the romantic realism of his time. Although he is no longer widely known today, in his active years he was known as a skilled artist and dedicated educator who played an important role in the cultural life of his native city.
De Swart specialized in portraits, genre scenes and landscapes, with a preference for classical compositions and a bright use of color. His style was realistic with romantic features, in which he did not shy away from a certain idealization of reality. In his portraits he emphasized character and dignity, and his landscapes show an eye for detail and harmony.
In addition to his work as a painter, De Swart was also active as a drawing teacher and he stimulated the artistic development of young artists in Arnhem and the surrounding area. His commitment to art education made him a respected figure in the local community. He may also have been connected to the art academy or local societies, where he passed on his knowledge and skills to a new generation.
Although his name later faded into the background in national art history, Corstiaan Hendrikus de Swart represents a generation of artists who remained true to the classical tradition in the midst of a century of artistic change. His oeuvre and legacy reflect the value of craftsmanship, observation and the cultural importance of regional painting in the 19th century.
