Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers (1819, The Hague 1866, The Hague) was a Dutch romantic painter, active in the period 1834-1866. He trained at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague from 1839 to 1840. Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers (1819, The Hague 1866, The Hague) was a Dutch romantic painter, active in the period 1834-1866. He trained at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague from 1839 to 1840. Thereafter he studied under the celebrated painter and sought-after teacher Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). His work is highly influenced by Schelfhout. Hoppenbrouwers occasionally left the painting of the figures to his friend Charles Rochussen. Schelfhout, David Bles and S.L. Verveer also painted the staffage in a few of his works. Hoppenbrouwers painted summer and winter landscapes, mountain sceneries and cityscapes, dunes and woodlands. He was a teacher to Louis Apol and Antonius Josephus Madlener. He was a member of the Koninklijke Akademie (Royal Academy) of Amsterdam.
