Candace Charlton was born in Durban, South Africa in 1968. She attended the Johannesburg School of Art, Ballet, Drama and Music from 1983-1986. Candace Charlton was born in Durban, South Africa in 1968. She attended the Johannesburg School of Art, Ballet, Drama and Music from 1983-1986. Charlton received two scholarships and enrolled at the Rhodes University in Grahamstown where she graduated in Fine Art and majored in Sculpture and History of Art.

After graduating Charlton took part in various exhibitions and competitions. In 1989 and 1992 she exhibited in Port Elizabeth at the Eastern Province Society of Fine Art. The second time she was awarded with the Eisteddfod Floating Trophy for the best work in the category of figure drawing. She became a member of the Artist’s Market Association in Johannesburg and the Magnolia Artist’s Market in Pretoria participating in monthly open-air exhibitions.

From 1997 Charlton worked with the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery in Durban, holding her first solo exhibition in 1998 which received wide appreciation from the public.

In 2000 Charlton moved to Europe. She currently lives and works in The Netherlands and Italy and is represented by Morren Galleries.

The human form and combination of figurative and abstract features is the main focus in her work. Her paintings show intensely studied portraits where she tries to reveal the depth of the human psyche. More recently Charlton begun to feature landscape in her paintings.

Candace Charlton regularly holds exhibitions, both in The Netherlands as well as in South Africa.
