Pieter Wagemans (Antwerp, 1948) is a contemporary Belgian painter, known for his masterful still lifes and classical portraits. His work demonstrates exceptional technical mastery, in which light, texture and form come together in compositions that feel both timeless and lively. Although he grew up as an artist entirely in the 20th century, his style is strongly rooted in the tradition of the Flemish Baroque and the Dutch masters of the 17th century, such as Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch.
Wagemans was born into an artistic family and began drawing at a young age. He received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he learned to master the classical techniques of painting. After his studies, he consciously chose to focus on the classical still life, at a time when abstraction and conceptual art were dominant. This choice was not always understood, but Wagemans remained true to his fascination for precision, colour and beauty.
His still lifes are recognizable by their rich detailing: blooming peonies, delicate tulips, shiny fruit, antique objects and glassware are depicted with an almost photographic precision. Yet his work is more than technical virtuosity: his compositions are carefully balanced and exude an almost spiritual tranquility. Through his use of natural light and his ability to make transience tangible, each work is given a poetic charge.
In addition to still lifes, Wagemans also paints portraits, often on commission, in which his love for realism and eye for character are clearly evident. He has portrayed members of the Belgian aristocracy and upper middle class, among others, but also remains faithful to modest commissions, out of a deep love for the craft.
In 1992, Wagemans co-founded the artists' group Classical Realism, with which he and like-minded artists wanted to put realism back on the map as a fully-fledged art movement. This movement was particularly popular in the United States, where his work was also included in various galleries and exhibitions.
His paintings can be found in both private collections and public spaces in Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States. Although he rarely gives interviews and is rarely in the media, Wagemans has built a dedicated circle of collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate his work for its timelessness and technical excellence.
Pieter Wagemans still lives and works in Antwerp, where he devotes himself daily to his craft, faithful to the silence, light and paint that have characterized his artistry for decades.
