  • About the artist

lse Oelbers (born in the Netherlands, 1983) is a contemporary visual artist and designer who works at the intersection of nature, architecture and tactile experience. Her work is characterized by a profound fascination for natural growth processes, organic structures and the sensory experience of materials. She combines craftsmanship with research into sustainability, ecology and human interaction with the living environment.

Oelbers graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven, where she developed as a designer with a strong conceptual bent and a great sensitivity to materials. Early in her career she stood out with projects in which nature and technology are not mutually exclusive, but rather complement each other. She often works with living or ephemeral materials – moss, fungi, plant pigments – that change through time and context, giving each work a temporary character.

Her installations and objects invite the viewer to touch, smell, feel and experience. They transcend the traditional boundaries between art and design and search for ways to restore the connection between man and nature. In her studio she works with craft techniques such as weaving, papermaking, woodworking and ceramics, but she uses these means with a contemporary, investigative eye.

Oelbers' projects have been exhibited at international venues such as Dutch Design Week, Salone del Mobile in Milan and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. She has also worked on commissions from cultural institutions and public space initiatives on installations that challenge the user to slow down and learn to see again. Her work is included in private collections and often published in design and art magazines.

In addition to her autonomous practice, Oelbers regularly gives workshops and lectures on sensory design, ecological thinking and the role of art in system change. She sees the artist as a researcher, connector and disruptor – someone who opens up new perspectives with beauty and friction.

Ilse Oelbers lives and works in the Netherlands, where she sees her studio as a laboratory for experiment, collaboration and wonder. Her oeuvre continues to grow, at the pace of moss: slow, layered and unstoppable.
