- About the artist
Walter Elst (Antwerp, 1965) is a Belgian painter known for his refined, artisanal approach to classical painting. After completing his medical studies at the University of Brussels, he decided to devote himself entirely to his true calling: painting.
From a young age, Elst developed his artistic skills through private lessons in landscape and portrait painting with Leon Lommaert. His further education was further developed under the guidance of Raymond Van Hoeck and Petrus Valckx, but Willem Dolphyn, in particular, played a decisive role in his training as a still-life painter and left a lasting influence on his work.
Walter Elst's oeuvre is multifaceted and includes still lifes, trompe-l'œil paintings, landscapes, and farmhouse interiors. Yet, his greatest affinity lies with the landscape, where he fully expresses his sense of atmosphere, light, and composition. His style and choice of subject matter are deliberately traditional and closely related to the painting of the 17th-century masters, whom he admires both technically and artistically.
Thanks to his exceptional technical mastery, refined sense of harmony, and strong color compositions, Walter Elst enjoys great respect from collectors and fellow artists in both the Netherlands and Belgium. His work is valued for its combination of classical mastery and timeless expressiveness.
