  • About the artist

Petronella Huberta (Nel) van Lith, born in 1932 in Blaricum, belongs to the generation of Dutch sculptors who established a distinct position for themselves in the field of figurative art in the second half of the twentieth century. She trained at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where she mastered the craftsmanship of modeling and working in bronze and stone in meticulous detail.

Van Lith adopted a figurative approach to sculpture early on, at a time when abstraction and conceptual movements were becoming increasingly dominant. Her work is characterized by a strong focus on the human form, often emphasizing portraiture. In her sculptures, she succeeds not only in capturing the outward resemblance but also in depicting the inner presence and character of her subject.

Besides portraits and smaller sculptures, Van Lith also created monumental sculptures for public spaces. These works are distinguished by a powerful, clear form and great accessibility: they are recognizable, approachable, and often aimed at evoking a sense of connection with their surroundings.

Nel van Lith worked extensively in bronze, combining a vibrant texture and a keen eye for detail with a clear structure. Her style demonstrates a deep respect for the classical tradition of sculpture, yet simultaneously reflects a contemporary sensitivity to expression and expressiveness.

Over the years, she received commissions from municipalities, institutions, and private individuals, allowing her work to remain visible in various locations throughout the Netherlands. She also regularly participated in exhibitions of Dutch sculpture, thus confirming her position in the art world.

Van Lith remained active and involved in art well into her later years. She is considered an example of an artist who remained true to figuration and, through her sculptures, added a tangible, human dimension to post-war Dutch art.
