  • About the artist
Robert Cottingham is an American Contemporary artist, born in 1935 in Brooklyn (New York). After studying art at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute, he started his career in advertising in the early 1960s. In 1964 Cottingham moved to Los Angeles. Fascinated by the different environment of the West Coast metropolis, he began to commit to painting. In 1968, he ended his advertising career and devoted all his time to painting. In the late 1960s, he started using photography in his painting practice. Important sources of inspiration in Cottingham’s work are the paintings of Pieter Mondrian, Edward Hopper, Stuart David, Charles Demuth and Marsden Hartley. A lot of his paintings and prints represent the architecture and commercial signage of “downtown America” in the forties and fifties.
