- About the artist
Drago Pecenica is a draftsman and artist who finds his greatest inspiration in nature. Trees, polders, and fences are the main characters in his work. His drawings are distinguished by their refined and meticulous execution, in which the silence and power of the landscape become tangible.
Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Drago arrived in the Netherlands by chance—or, as he puts it, by fate. Here, he found his way as an artist and built a life for himself through his art. Initially, he found the flat Dutch landscape uninspiring; he missed the ruggedness of his native region. Gradually, however, he became fascinated by the distinctive pollard willows, in which he recognized a reflection of his own life. As he puts it: “Pollard willows resemble me. My life was pruned like that too, but new branches still grow.”
For Drago, nature is not only a source of visual inspiration but also of spiritual significance. He sees the trees and landscapes he draws as God's creation and is grateful that he himself has been given the gift of creation. His work exudes tranquility and admiration for creation, allowing the viewer to discover the beauty in the simplicity of the Dutch landscape.
