  • About the artist

    Johan Sterenberg (1920, Sint-Annen – 2002, Marum), also spelt Johan van Sterenburg, was a Dutch sculptor and draughtsman. He studied under Willem Valk at the Academy Minerva in Groningen. He was apprenticed to Jan Bronner, Piet Esser and M.P. Semeijn at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam, and he was a pupil of Oscar Jespers in Brussels. In 1959, he married the painter Rose Marie Gompertz. Sterenberg’s subjects are nudes and figures. He experimented with various casting methods including lead casting. He belongs to the Groep van Figuratieve Abstractie (Group of Figurative Abstraction). He was a member of the Amsterdam art academy Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, and the NKVB, Nederlandse Kring van Beeldhouwers (Dutch Circle of Sculptors).
