  • About the artist

I Ketut Teja Astawa, born in 1971 in the coastal town of Sanur, Bali, is an artist who uniquely weaves together the past and present of his island. Trained at the Faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar, Teja has developed a visual language that is deeply rooted in Balinese culture, yet sharply reflective of the contemporary world.

Teja’s work is instantly recognizable: vivid landscapes populated by mythical creatures and animal figures, inspired by the Tantri stories — an age-old fable tradition from Bali full of moral lessons and life wisdom. In his hands, these stories are not merely retold, but reimagined. He brings them to life with a humorous, almost childlike visual language in which animals and people act seemingly naively, but in which there is always a deeper meaning.

What sets Teja apart is his ability to combine traditional Balinese painting techniques with contemporary themes. His use of stacked perspectives — a classic method in Balinese painting — gives his canvases a lively layering, in which modernity and tradition enter into visual dialogue. He does not paint a romantic Bali, but an island in transition: a place where urban growth, tourism and culture constantly collide and merge.

In his work, subtle social commentary is never far away. A critical view of modern society lurks between the comic figures and colourful scenes. His paintings are like visual fables: cheerful on the surface, but imbued with meaning for those who dare to look.

Today, Teja Astawa lives and works in Denpasar, where he continues to follow his artistic path as a storyteller of his time — someone who knows how to reveal the soul of Bali through the eyes of animals and myths.
