- About the artworkLu Luo (China,1971)
Known for her use of traditional Chinese costumes and vibrant textiles, Lu Luo encounters the canvas as a stage upon which stories come together,
Lu Luo grew up in China, amid the bustle of an opera house, joining her parents and their theatre group during their tours around the province. Inspired by the fervour of Chinese opera, Lu often applies elements of traditional Chinese theater costumes and textiles in her work, which she abstractly incorporates in her artworks.

Lu Luo (born 1971 in Sichuan, China) is a contemporary artist known for her use of traditional Chinese costumes and vibrant textiles in her work. She grew up surrounded by the dynamics of an opera house, where she accompanied her parents and their theatre group on tours throughout the province.
This experience inspired her to abstractly incorporate elements of traditional Chinese theatre costumes and textiles into her artwork.
Her work is characterised by the recurring motif of classical Chinese kimonos and theatre costumes, which she places on the canvas in various ways and with various materials.
Initially, she used the original fabrics of these costumes directly on the canvas, but gradually developed other methods, such as pasting strips of paper or parts of pre-printed Chinese cardboard packaging over paintings.
She also regularly uses coloured rice paper, with which she makes thin rolls that run parallel to each other, evoking associations with theatre plays.
Lu Luo has exhibited her work internationally and remains a unique voice in the contemporary art world, weaving traditional elements with modern forms of expression.
