- About the artist
Wim van der Kant, born in 1949 in Kampen, is a Dutch sculptor known for his realistic bronze sculptures of young men. Although self-taught, he studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amersfoort, where he focused on ceramics and spatial forms.
His fascination with sculpture began at the age of seven, when he came face to face with Rodin's 'L'Age d'Arain' during an exhibition in his hometown. This experience inspired him to follow his own artistic path.
Van der Kant began making bronze sculptures in the late 1980s. His work is characterized by a tight and detailed representation of the human form, with a focus on young men. He wants to capture the moments when a child discovers his independence and begins to develop. His choice to depict boys stems from his own experiences and feelings from his youth.
Van der Kant has exhibited his work at various fairs and exhibitions, including the KunstRai in Amsterdam, Lineart in Ghent and the annual Realism fairs in Amsterdam. His work is represented by Morren Galleries in Utrecht.
His sculptures show similarities with those from Greek and Roman antiquity, where young people were admired for their vitality and naivety. Through his work he tries to show respect and appreciation for the purity and loneliness of man at moments of real importance.
