Wim Schumacher (Amsterdam, May 5, 1894 – Amsterdam, August 31, 1986) was an influential Dutch painter and graphic artist, known for his unique contribution to modern art in the Netherlands. His oeuvre is characterized by a powerful interplay of light and dark, strong contrasts, and a mystical, almost metaphysical atmosphere. Schumacher worked in a recognizable style that combines elements of Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Symbolism.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Schumacher developed his characteristic visual language with strict plane divisions, architectural forms, and stylized figures. He experimented with geometry and light, giving his compositions a poetic and contemplative tension. His work frequently reveals a fascination with emptiness, silence, and inner experience—themes that distinguish him from his contemporaries.

Wim Schumacher exhibited with important Dutch art associations and galleries and participated in prominent exhibitions both in the Netherlands and abroad. His work is represented in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Centraal Museum Utrecht, and various other museums and private collections.

Schumacher also played a role in art education and encouraged new generations of artists to explore idiosyncrasy and emotional depth in their work. His oeuvre, with iconic and monumental paintings, remains valued to this day for its powerful visual language and timeless atmosphere.

With his rich and recognizable style, Wim Schumacher is one of the most important representatives of Dutch modern painting of the 20th century. His work remains a source of inspiration for enthusiasts of expressionist and light-philosophical visual art.
