Galerie Flatland - About the artist
Wim Izaks (1943 – 1989) was a Dutch painter who, with his expressive and intuitive painting style, built up a powerful and idiosyncratic oeuvre in a short period of time. His work moves between figuration and abstraction and is imbued with emotion, symbolism and inner experience. Although his career ended tragically early, he left behind an impressive artistic trail that has since been cherished and managed by the Wim Izaks Foundation.
Izaks was born in 1943 in the east of the Netherlands, in an environment where religion, silence and nature formed the background of his youth. These elements — a certain mysticism, modesty, but also confrontation with existential questions — would later return in his work. He studied at the Art Academy in Enschede (AKI), where he freed himself from conventional techniques and began to develop his own painting language. His work became increasingly personal, expressive and direct, often painted in powerful brushstrokes and with a raw, physical energy.
The themes in his paintings are often charged: human figures, masks, heads, animals, hands and symbolic shapes appear in restless compositions, sometimes on the border between dream and nightmare. His use of colour is intense, with lots of red, black and earth tones, and his works exude an inner necessity — they are not conceived, but felt.
Wim Izaks lived in seclusion and worked in solitude. For him, his painting was a form of existential expression, a necessity rather than an ambition. He did not seek public recognition, but worked from an inner urge. Nevertheless, his work was noticed and appreciated in artistic circles, with exhibitions in Groningen, Enschede and Amsterdam, among other places.
After his sudden death in 1989, the Wim Izaks Foundation was established to manage and promote his work. Since then, the foundation has organised exhibitions, managed the estate and annually awards the Wim Izaks Prize to young artists with a similarly personal and urgent approach to art.
Wim Izaks is considered an artist who left behind a compelling and uncompromising oeuvre in his short life. His work is a search for essence, for what is happening beneath the surface of the visible world — a visual language of the soul.
