This watercolour depicts a city street in Algiers, on a bright and sunny day. The large sheet shows how Van der Bilt managed to bring across the intense sunlight in the Algerian city. Judging the depiction, he probably used the Algiers casbah as a source of inspiration, possibly the then Rue des bouchers (Street of the butchers).

The work is signed on the lower right: ‘Algiers // J.Van der.Bilt’

Deze aquarel verbeeldt een straat in Algiers op een heldere, zonnige dag. Het grote blad laat zien hoe Van der Bilt erin slaagde om het intense zonlicht van de Algerijnse stad te verbeelden. Afgaande op de afbeelding, gebruikte hij waarschijnlijk de kashba van Algiers als inspiratiebron, mogelijk de toenmalige Rue des bouchers (Straat van de slagers)

About the artist
Johan van der Bilt (1882-1943) was born in Amsterdam. He studied at the academy in Amsterdam, and continued his education in Paris.
His work is characterized by broad brushstrokes and sketch-like appearance, with the background often visible between the brushstrokes.
The exotic landscape he encountered while traveling is a recurring theme in his paintings and drawings.
