Julien-Hippolyte Féron (1864-1945) was born in the Normandy town of Saint-Jean-du-Cardonnay. He was trained as an engineer, and thanks to his wealthy father he was able to start a business as an alcohol distributor. His company became a great regional success. With the money he earned as a trader he could afford a large painting studio.

He was largely self-taught, and initially worked in a relatively generic, impressionistic style. After meeting Armand Guillaumin in 1904, Féron changed his style.

His work after that time is more in line with the Fauvists. Like the Fauves, Féron started using bright, sometimes unmixed colors. He used his new, bright palette and free brushwork to paint the landscapes of his native region.

On several occasions he took part in exhibitions in Paris. Féron's work was shown at the Salon des Artiste Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne, among others. His work can mainly be found in private collections, but also in Musée Carnavalet.
