- About the artist
Gerrie Wachtmeester (1957–2024) studied at the Minerva Academy in Groningen from 1976 to 1981. He became one of the leading Dutch painters in the tradition of magical realism.
His work is characterized by a refined technique, an eye for detail, and a remarkable imagination. In his paintings, he blends the mundane with the wondrous, creating worlds that are simultaneously recognizable and alienating. Realistic elements are placed in unusual or impossible contexts, creating a sense of suspense and wonder for the viewer.
Wachtmeester exhibited in galleries worldwide and his work was included in the collections of various Dutch museums, reaching both a national and international audience. His paintings demonstrate a deep dedication to craftsmanship and an ongoing quest for imagination beyond the visible.
As a painter, Gerrie Wachtmeester left behind a body of work that deserves its place within the tradition of magical realism. His legacy consists of a series of works that continue to challenge the viewer to look at reality differently — subtle, enigmatic, and with a poetic layering that makes him a unique voice within Dutch painting.
