  • About the artist

Gerardus "Geer" van Velde (Lisse, 5 April 1898 – Cachan, 5 March 1977) was a Dutch painter who is considered one of the leading artists of the post-war École de Paris. Initially he worked as a house painter, but later he developed into an influential artist with a unique style.

    Early Life and Education

Geer van Velde was born in Lisse as the second son of Willem Adriaan van Velde and Hendrika Catharina von der Voorst. His father owned a small inland shipping company in firewood and charcoal on the Rhine, but after bankruptcy he left the family, leaving Geer and his three siblings in poverty. In 1903 the family settled in The Hague, where Geer started as an apprentice designer at the company Schaijk & Kramers at the age of twelve. Here his interest in art was encouraged, and he was given the opportunity to develop his artistic skills.

    Career and Artistic Development

In 1925, Geer moved to Paris to join his older brother Bram van Velde and further develop his artistic talent. Initially, he made figurative-expressionist work, but after moving to the South of France in 1938, he found his own style, influenced by the Mediterranean light. His work was characterized by a reduction of reality to vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, combined with areas of color. The depiction of a pale, filtered light played an important role in this. Until 1940, figures and objects were still recognizable in his work, but later his style evolved towards more abstraction.

During his career, Geer van Velde exhibited in various countries and participated in important art manifestations. In 1963, he traveled to Brazil for solo exhibitions at the São Paulo Biennial and in Rio de Janeiro. His work was internationally recognized and appreciated, and he is considered an important representative of the École de Paris.

    Death

Geer van Velde died on March 5, 1977 in Cachan, France, at the age of 78. His legacy includes a rich oeuvre that illustrates the transition from figuration to abstraction and emphasizes his unique contribution to modern art.
