Joe Goode is an American Pop Art painter. Born in Oklahoma City in 1937, he moved to Los Angeles in 1959. There he attended the Chouinard Art Institute for two years. Goode was first recognized for his milk bottle paintings and cloud imagery. In 1962 his work was included in the exhibit ‘New Painting of Common Objects’ at the Pasadena Art Museum (now Norton Simon Museum), curated by Walter Hopps. This exhibition was ground-breaking because it was the first museum Pop Art exhibition in the United States. Goodes work was exhibited alongside, among others, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. In his work, Goode combined various traditional and non-traditional media and explored images which project a way of seeing ‘in and out’ and ‘up and down’ as well as things that can be seen through: milk bottles, oceans, waterfalls, clouds and torn skies. His subject matter remained relatively consistent over the years but he has revisited each theme using different media. Over the past fifty years, Goodes work has been shown in hundreds of major museum exhibitions, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and has received multiple awards and grants. Goode currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
