Hubertus Cornelis Maria van Lith was born in Amsterdam in 1908 and remained closely connected to the city throughout his life, where he died in 1977. He grew up in a period when the Dutch art world was in a state of flux, with the legacy of tradition on the one hand and the rise of modernist movements on the other. In this tension, Van Lith developed into an artist who pursued both mastery of craftsmanship and a personal style.

He trained at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, a breeding ground for artists who would set the tone in Dutch art after the First World War. There, he mastered the techniques of drawing, painting, and sculpture, with a particular focus on figuration. His work demonstrates a strong focus on form and composition, often taking people and their surroundings as his starting point.

Van Lith worked not only in the intimacy of the studio but also on commission, which led to his oeuvre becoming partly connected to the public space. He created monumental works and portraits, in which his sense of proportion and balance was clearly evident. At the same time, he produced smaller works in which the artist's hand remains tangible in the brushstrokes and modeling.

Although aware of the innovations in the art of his time, Van Lith remained true to the power of recognizable forms and human expression. His oeuvre thus stands in line with Dutch artists who bridged the gap between tradition and modernity.

After his death in 1977, Van Lith remained known primarily to connoisseurs and collectors who appreciate his craftsmanship and the tranquil, timeless quality of his sculptures and paintings. His work is included in private collections and can occasionally be found in public spaces, where it commemorates an artist who never turned his back on his city of Amsterdam and who, from that solid foundation, made a personal contribution to twentieth-century Dutch art.
