Achille Laugé (1861–1944) was a celebrated French Neo-Impressionist painter renowned for his luminous landscapes, intimate portraits, and tranquil rural scenes inspired by the countryside of southern France. Born in Arzens, near Carcassonne, Laugé developed a distinctive artistic voice that combined the scientific color theories of Neo-Impressionism with a deeply personal sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and the rhythms of nature.

After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and later in Paris, Laugé became acquainted with the innovative ideas of artists such as Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. While influenced by their pioneering pointillist techniques, he never adopted their methods rigidly. Instead, he developed a softer and more lyrical approach, applying small touches of pure color to create subtle tonal harmonies and shimmering effects of light.

Laugé spent most of his life in the Languedoc region, where the landscapes, villages, orchards, and fields became the principal subjects of his work. His paintings are characterized by balanced compositions, gentle geometry, and an extraordinary ability to capture the changing qualities of sunlight throughout the day and seasons. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he remained largely removed from the Parisian art world, preferring the quiet environment of the countryside that inspired his art.

Throughout his career, Laugé remained committed to exploring the relationship between color, light, and form. His works convey a sense of serenity and timelessness, transforming ordinary rural scenes into harmonious studies of atmosphere and perception. Today, he is regarded as one of the most important regional Neo-Impressionists, admired for his unique interpretation of pointillism and his contribution to the evolution of modern French landscape painting.

His paintings continue to be highly sought after by collectors and museums, celebrated for their radiant color, technical refinement, and enduring poetic beauty.
