Soe Soe was born in 1967 in Laputta, a riverside town in Myanmar's Irrawaddy Delta. His childhood was spent in an environment where water, nature, and Buddhist traditions were inextricably linked to daily life. These early impressions formed the basis for his later visual language: an interplay of color, light, and movement that reflects both the dynamism of nature and the layering of human emotions.
From an early age, he displayed a strong urge to depict. In a country that was then politically isolated, Soe Soe developed his artistry largely autonomously, without direct access to Western art movements. This led to the development of a style that is deeply rooted in its own culture, yet simultaneously feels universal and contemporary. His work is characterized by vibrant brushstrokes, transparent layers of paint, and an intense use of color, with which he captures moods that transcend realism and tradition.
From the 1990s onward, Soe Soe established himself within Yangon's burgeoning art scene. Exhibitions at home and abroad have earned him recognition as one of the innovative voices of modern Myanmarese art. His paintings are often described as lyrical abstractions: landscapes that dissolve into fields of color, or human figures that radiate more energy and emotion than form.
Besides being a painter, he is also a mentor to younger artists in Myanmar. He encourages them to forge their own path, just as he himself has done, not denying traditions but transforming them into new expressions.
Today, Soe Soe is seen as a bridge-builder: an artist who remains true to his roots in the rich Myanmarese culture, yet simultaneously connects with an international visual language. His work exudes the poetry of the delta where he was born and speaks with colors that transcend borders.
