- Over kunstwerkThe work of Jacobus Theodorus Abels, anglers in rowboat in moonlight, offered by Artiquair, is a typical example of his work. In his early days he painted summer landscapes, later river and city views by moonlight. A book by Jef Rademakers has been published with the title: Painter of the night, Jacob Abels. The back of this book even claims that Jacob Abels is considered the most important painter of nocturnal landscapes in Dutch Romanticism.
- Over kunstenaarJacobus Theodorus "Jacob" Abels (1803–1866) was a well known Dutch 'moonlit' painter from the Romantic period. He started as a painter of summer landscapes but after his voyages he focussed on river views in moonlight paintings.
Abels was born in Amsterdam in 1803. He was a pupil of the animal painter Jan van Ravenswaay. In 1826 he had visited Germany, and on his return settled at the Hague. His wife was the daughter of P.G. Os. Between 1849 and 1853 he lived in Haarlem and later he moved to Arnhem.
He was especially noted for his paintings of moonlit landscapes. The Museum at Haarlem has works by him. He died at Abcoude on 11 June 1866.
Abels did not sign all his works but the master's hand is quite recognizable.
