    The work of Jacobus Theodorus Abels, anglers in rowboat in moonlight, offered by Artiquair, is a typical example of his work. In his early days he painted summer landscapes, later river and city views by moonlight. A book by Jef Rademakers has been published with the title: Painter of the night, Jacob Abels. The back of this book even claims that Jacob Abels is considered the most important painter of nocturnal landscapes in Dutch Romanticism.

    Jacobus Theodorus "Jacob" Abels (1803-1866) è stato un noto pittore olandese "al chiaro di luna" del periodo romantico. Ha iniziato come pittore di paesaggi estivi, ma dopo i suoi viaggi si è concentrato sulle vedute del fiume nei dipinti al chiaro di luna. Abele nacque ad Amsterdam nel 1803. Fu allievo del pittore di animali Jan van Ravenswaay. Nel 1826 aveva visitato la Germania e al suo ritorno si era stabilito all'Aia. Sua moglie era figlia di P.G. Os. Tra il 1849 e il 1853 visse ad Haarlem e successivamente si trasferì ad Arnhem. Era particolarmente noto per i suoi dipinti di paesaggi al chiaro di luna. Il Museo di Haarlem ha opere di lui.
