Brian Donnelly, known worldwide by his artist name KAWS, was born in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey. His early fascination with visual culture stemmed from a childhood constantly surrounded by cartoons, comic books, and the visual dynamism of the city. As a teenager, he began exploring graffiti and developed his own signature style, making a name for himself on the streets of New York in the 1990s. His work soon became visible not only on walls but also on billboards and bus shelters, where he transformed existing advertising images into critical and humorous works of art.
After studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he graduated in illustration in 1996, KAWS found a unique position at the intersection of street art, pop culture, and design. His iconic motifs, such as the crossed-eye figures and the Companion characters, are recognizable yet constantly innovative. They reference the familiar language of cartoons, yet simultaneously carry a melancholic and human charge.
From the early 2000s, KAWS surprised the art world by expanding his work into new realms: monumental sculptures, paintings that blend abstraction and figuration, and limited-edition design objects that, in collaboration with brands like Nike, Dior, and Uniqlo, gained enormous appeal. He demonstrated that art needn't remain confined to a single domain, but can move between the street, museum, gallery, and fashion store.
Exhibitions at prominent institutions, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Yuz Museum in Shanghai, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City, confirmed his status as a leading international artist. Yet, his work remains accessible to a wide audience: KAWS successfully connects high art and popular culture without compromising his own signature style.
Today, KAWS is considered an artist who not only creates images but also opens a dialogue about consumption, nostalgia, and the role of visual language in a globalized society. His oeuvre shows how a figure from the graffiti world can grow into one of the most influential artists of his generation, with a lasting impact on both art history and contemporary culture.
