  • About the artist

Jaap Min (1914–1987) was born in Bergen, North Holland, in an artistic climate strongly influenced by the Bergen School. Although Min is often associated with this movement, he developed a distinctive style that was both understated and intensely personal. He grew up in a family where art and craft were a given; his father was a house painter, and Min learned to appreciate the materials and the craft at a young age.

Min showed a strong aptitude for drawing and painting from an early age. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he was taught by artists including Heinrich Campendonk. The academic discipline provided an important foundation, but Min only found his true artistic voice after returning to Bergen in the 1930s and 1940s. The North Holland landscape—with its dunes, polders, tranquil village scenes, and changing skies—would play a central role throughout his career.

Min's reputation grew steadily in the 1950s and 1960s. He exhibited frequently in the Netherlands, including at Kunsthandel Dekker and De Blauwe Deur, and internationally. He was not only a painter but also a beloved draftsman and graphic artist. His oeuvre is characterized by a restrained, almost tranquil visual language: simple interiors, figures, farmyards, churches, landscapes, and dune views, composed in earthy tones and with a keen attention to light and texture. His work is often described as "intimistic"—small in gesture but grand in atmosphere and feeling.

In 1940, he married Maria ("Riet") Min-Dingjan, who supported him throughout his career and with whom he had four sons, including Jaap Min Jr., who would later also become a painter. The family lived for a long time on Molenweg in Bergen, where Jaap Min had his studio and where he worked on his paintings in peace for many years. He was known for his deliberate way of working: slowly, concentrated, and with great technical mastery.

In the final decades of his career, Min was considered one of the most important representatives of Bergen's post-war art tradition. His work was included in several museum collections, including the Kranenburgh Museum, and is today beloved by collectors for its timeless serenity and artisanal character.

Jaap Min died in 1987, but left behind an extensive and consistent oeuvre that offers an almost meditative glimpse of the North Holland landscape and the stillness of everyday life. His paintings are still praised for their tranquility, clarity, and understated power.
