- About the artist
Eric Morren (1970, De Bilt) studied at the Grafisch Lyceum in Utrecht and opened his first studio, Atelier Eric, at the Oudegracht at the age of twenty-two. What began as a studio and exhibition space for his own abstract painting practice quickly evolved into a gallery and meeting place for other artists. Morren proved a gifted gallerist, eventually expanding to multiple locations in Utrecht, Amsterdam, and Haarlem.
Following a period of reflection influenced by Eastern philosophy, Morren chose to scale back to the gallery’s original location, allowing space for a renewed personal artistic practice. He turned to sculpture, teaching himself welding and rapidly developing a distinctive visual language.
Morren’s welded steel sculptures employ a restrained geometric vocabulary of vertical axes and circular elements. Rooted in early twentieth-century modernism and constructivist traditions, the works also evoke post–Apollo 11 futurism through their industrial materiality and upward orientation. At once architectural and instrumental, they can be read as antennas or receivers, mediating between earth and cosmos, while their totemic forms recall tribal and ritual objects.
Through this synthesis of modernist clarity, space-age optimism, and archaic symbolism, Morren’s sculptures function as hybrid forms that unite industrial precision with metaphysical resonance.
