  • About the artist

    Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz (1868–1951) was a Dutch painter who dedicated himself to depicting rural life with a warm, accessible gaze. Born in Amsterdam and later working in Hilversum, among other places, he developed a recognizable style in which tranquility, simplicity, and craftsmanship take center stage.

    Scherrewitz became best known for his paintings of farmyards, stables, and workhorses, often set in sun-drenched landscapes. His work is characterized by a loose yet precise brushwork and a rich, harmonious use of color. In contrast to the more somber movements of the 19th century, he opted for a lighter, optimistic approach to farm life, in which man and animal come together in balance.

    Horses play a prominent role in his oeuvre—not only as working animals, but as characterful presences within the landscape. With attention to posture, movement, and light, he managed to bring these subjects to life without idealizing them. Johan Frederik Cornelis Scherrewitz leaves behind a oeuvre that celebrates the Dutch countryside in its most recognizable form: honest, atmospheric, and imbued with a sense of everyday harmony.
