In the beginning of the 20th century the village of Kortenhoef, located in the middle of Holland, was popular among painters because of its surroundings with lovely lakes and small rivers. This picturesque scenery attracted many landscape-painters. One of them was Piet van Wijngaerdt. Later on he became one of the leading figures of the so-called 'Bergense School'. This colourful painting (Oil on canvas, signed lower left) shows the expressionist talent of the painter Van Wijngaerdt.

Il pittore di Amsterdam Piet van Wijngaerdt è considerato, insieme a Henri Le Fauconnier, il teorico fondatore della scuola di Bergen. Dipinse paesaggi, figure e potenti nature morte in uno stile cubista-espressionista, in cui contrasti cromatici inaspettati e gli effetti di luce e ombra erano importanti mezzi espressivi. Per i suoi fiori ha scelto forme distintive come amarilli, giglio e gladioli. Per i suoi paesaggi ha tratto ispirazione dai terreni agricoli a sud di Amsterdam. Dopo il 1941 lavorò principalmente ad Abcoude e dintorni.
