In the beginning of the 20th century the village of Kortenhoef, located in the middle of Holland, was popular among painters because of its surroundings with lovely lakes and small rivers. This picturesque scenery attracted many landscape-painters. One of them was Piet van Wijngaerdt. Later on he became one of the leading figures of the so-called 'Bergense School'. This colourful painting (Oil on canvas, signed lower left) shows the expressionist talent of the painter Van Wijngaerdt.

O pintor de Amsterdã Piet van Wijngaerdt é considerado, junto com Henri Le Fauconnier, o fundador teórico da Escola de Bergen. Ele pintou paisagens, figuras e poderosas naturezas mortas em um estilo cubista-expressionista, em que contrastes inesperados de cores e os efeitos de luz e sombra eram importantes meios de expressão. Para suas flores, ele escolheu formas distintas como amarílis, lírios e gladíolos. Para suas paisagens, ele se inspirou nas fazendas ao sul de Amsterdã. Depois de 1941, ele trabalhou principalmente em Abcoude e arredores.
