Piet Esser (1914-2004) was for many years professor of Sculpture at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. His sculptures can be found all over the Netherlands in musea as well as in the public space. Among them is a big sculpture of an iceskater. This smaller, impressionistic sculpture is a preliminery study for this monument.

Piet Esser era uno scultore olandese, sposato con la pittrice di acquerelli Dora Esser-Wellensiek. Era un membro del "Groep van de figuratieve abstractie" olandese (gruppo di astrazione figurativa). Nel 1938 vinse il Prix de Rome e nel 1956 ricevette il Prijs van de Stichting Kunstenaarsverzet 1942-1945. Fu professore alla Rijksakademie di Amsterdam (1947-1979) e fu figura di insegnante per personaggi illustri come Jan Wolkers e Giovanni Gardella. Piet Esser è considerato uno dei migliori ritrattisti olandesi del XX secolo. Edwards ha lavorato in tutti i Paesi Bassi nelle piazze e nei musei. È stato elogiato per la sua bella arte, ma anche diffamato dagli artisti moderni emergenti negli anni '60. Ha continuato il suo lavoro dopo il suo ritiro in Francia. Morì nel 2004.
