- About the artworkNaast de centrale afbeelding van Pasen, de Anastasis en de belangrijkste feestdagen in de orthodoxe kerk in de buitenste rand, kent deze ikoon nog een reeks van afbeeldingen, namelijk de Passiecyclus. De Passiecyclus beschrijft de laatste dagen van Christus in 12 scènes, beginnend bij het Laatste Avondmaal en eindigend bij de Graflegging. In de westerse traditie een vaak gebruikte iconografie, denk aan de schilderijen van de 12 statiën in de Rooms-katholieke kerken, op ikonen zien we de Passiecyclus minder vaak.
Bijzonder aan deze ikoon is ook de drievoudige kovceg. Een kovceg is een verdieping die is aangebracht in het hout van de ikoon, om aan te geven dat wat er op staat niet van deze wereld is. In deze ikoon zijn maar liefst drie van deze verdiepingen aangebracht. - About the artist
