  • About the artwork
"The Look" is part of Ger Doornink's newest collection. Doornink has always had the Old Dutch Masters very present in his painting. In this case, the direct influence of Frans Hals is undeniable: the white and black contrast against the earth tones, the movement captured in the canvas and the rapid and almost careless brushstrokes are just some of the few characteristics they share.
Without abandoning his own personal painting style, Ger Doornink plays around in order to learn from the Masters and sharpen his technique. In this series, he succeeds to capture a fleeting moment while implementing a sense of movement. Already during the 1500s Frans Hals achieved this effect, but it was not until the Impressionists came around, in the 1900s, that he was not recognised and gained his place in the History of Art. Even Vincent van Gogh himself foresaw the success of Hals and admired his work during his stay in Antwerp.
Many years later, Frans Hals is still a source of inspiration worldwide, and Ger Doornink could not be less. Without looking much further than his homeland in The Netherlands, Ger Doornink is able to capture the essence of the best and speak to art enthusiasts and collectors worldwide.
This artwork is currently exhibited in Villa del Arte Gallery in Amsterdam, The Netherlands: Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 34, 1017 DG, Amsterdam.
