    Paul Arntzenius was an artist but also a collector. He wanted to depict with his collection that "beauty" was losing ground due to the rise of abstract art. Beautiful figurative still life created before the war.
  • About the artist

    Paul Arntzenius, known to have been a cousin of Floris Arntzenius, was born on May 20, 1883 in the Dutch city of the Hague. From 1901-1903 he received education at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague, being schooled by W.B. Tholen, who had become his caretaker after the passing of his mother. Throughout his life, Paul worked in Belgium, France and Zeeland, Amsterdam and the Hague in the Netherlands. In 1949 he won the Jacob Marisprijs in a cooperation with Theo Bitter. He was a member of both ‘Pulchri Studio’ in the Hague and ‘Arti et Amicitiae’ in Amsterdam. Paul Arntzenius was subject in various individual and group exhibition in both Amsterdam and the Hague. His work can be found in various collections of the Hague Gemeentemuseum, the Stedelijk Museum in Gouda, the Singer Museum in Laren, and the Rijkscollection. Aside from this, he was a passionate art collector. On January 4, 1965, Arntzenius passed away.
