The Leiden gunpowder disaster took place on January 12, 1807. 151 people were killed and more than 2,000 were injured. Approximately 220 homes were completely destroyed and declared uninhabitable. The bang was heard as far away as The Hague. King Louis Napoleon arrived after 5 hours and stayed for more than a day. He had thousands of soldiers help rebuild the city, made 30,000 guilders available from his private assets for the disaster fund specially established for this purpose and granted the city tax exemption for a period of ten years. He also sent his personal physician to Leiden and had Huis ten Bosch Palace turned into an emergency hospital, earning him his nickname 'Louis the Good'.
