- About the artworkA collection of four Chinese porcelain famille rose ‘Wu Shuang Pu’ (無雙譜) wine cups.
Guangxu mark and period (1875-1908).
The deep, U-shaped cup with straight sides incurving at the lower body and smoothly transitioning to the footring, one side of the exterior finely enameled with a depiction of Hua Mulan (花木蘭), flanked by two poems in calligraphy script telling the story of Hua Mulan.
Wu Shuang Pu ('Table of Peerless Heroes') is a book of woodcut prints, first printed in 1694, early on in the Qing dynasty. This book contains the biographies and imagined portraits of 40 notable heroes and heroines from the Han dynasty to the Song dynasty, all accompanied by a brief introduction and guided by a related poem in yuefu style. The illustrations from the book were widely distributed and re-used, often as motifs on Chinese porcelain.
Hua Mulan is a legendary Chinese folk heroine from the Northern and Southern dynasties era (4th to 6th century CE) of Chinese history. Scholars generally consider Mulan to be a fictional character.
According to legend, Mulan took her sick and aged father's place in the conscription for the army by disguising herself as a man. In the story, after 12 years prolonged and distinguished military service against nomadic hordes beyond the northern frontier, Mulan is honored by the emperor but declines a position of high office. She retires to her hometown, where she is reunited with her family and, much to the astonishment of her comrades, reveals herself as a woman.
