  • About the artist

Timothy Brown or Tim Brown (born August 4, 1923 near Jackson Mississippi) is an American painter.

Brown spent his childhood on his parents' farm. He started painting as a child with the paint his father used to renovate the house. Later he had to drop out of high school to help out on his father's farm.

Brown spent his military service in California during World War II. He hoped that he would be sent to Europe as a soldier, but this did not happen. After the war he wandered through the United States for a while, returning to his parents' home in 1948. He married in 1950. His parents both died in 1951. To show his two children something of his own youth, he started painting again. He painted simple images on old planks and scrap wood. These works mainly focus on his own life in the countryside, such as fishing on the river, people working in the fields and his dog.

In 1968, Brown's wife died and his two children left the farm. He was left alone and then completely isolated himself from his surroundings. Brown continued to paint and his style remained unchanged.

Brown does not consider himself an artist. His paintings are a naive representation of the reality around him. In the United States his paintings are characterized as folk art. In Europe his work hangs in museums and galleries and Brown is seen as a modernist with his own story.

In 2008, Brown no longer lives on his farm, but in total isolation. He only has contact with his agent Tom Turner.
