About the artist
Hans Kanters (Amsterdam, 1947) is a self-taught Dutch artist known for his exceptionally detailed figurative paintings at the intersection of surrealism and imaginary realism. For decades, he has followed an entirely unique artistic course, independent of the whims of the art world and passing trends.
Kanters creates carefully composed worlds in which reality and imagination flow seamlessly into one another. His technically refined paintings invite the viewer to continually discover new details and hidden meanings. He describes his oeuvre as a personal 'Surrealist Theater': a universe full of symbolism, mystery, and narrative power, in which human figures, architecture, and dreamlike elements combine to form an intriguing whole.
With his unique visual language and artisanal precision, Hans Kanters has secured a recognizable and distinct place within contemporary Dutch figurative art.
