    Gustave Mascart (1834-1914) – A beautiful spring day
    Gustave Mascart was a French painter and student of the widely traveled naval painter Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814-1879), best known in his life for his navies with warships. Mascart focused on the realistic cityscape. Paris and the periphery in particular were featured in his oeuvre. He can be considered one of the pioneers of what has come to be called “Montmartre painters”, with his views of Montmartre, the Moulin Rouge, Place Pigalle, et cetera. Mascart has also painted cityscapes in other places, including in: Amsterdam (the Montelbaanstoren), Como, Ghent, Ostend and also the windmills of Kinderdijk.

    Gustave Mascart (8 marzo 1834 – 1914) è stato un pittore francese, nato a Valenciennes. Studiò con il pittore di marine Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager, noto per i suoi dipinti di navi da guerra. Mascart, tuttavia, si dedicò a paesaggi urbani realistici, con particolare attenzione a Parigi e ai suoi dintorni.

    È considerato un pioniere dei "pittori di Montmartre" e spesso catturò scene di Montmartre, del Moulin Rouge e di Place Pigalle. Oltre alle scene parigine, Mascart dipinse anche paesaggi urbani di città come Amsterdam, Gand, Ostenda e Como, nonché i mulini a vento di Kinderdijk.

    Mascart espose regolarmente le sue opere al Salon di Parigi e i suoi dipinti sono stati messi all'asta più volte, a testimonianza del loro fascino duraturo.

    La sua opera è caratterizzata da una meticolosa attenzione ai dettagli e dalla capacità di catturare la vita urbana del XIX secolo, rendendolo un importante contributo alla pittura francese del suo tempo.
