Morren Galleries now manages the remarkable art collection of Hans Terbruggen (1946–2008), a passionate collector. After his passing, the plan to establish a museum was not realized. This collection, which includes museum-quality oil paintings and drawings, is available for viewing and for sale by appointment. All works are beautifully framed in handcrafted frames, and many are unique, as Terbruggen acquired almost all of Giovanni Tommasi Ferroni's works directly over the years.

An Artistic Family

Giovanni Tommasi Ferroni (Rome, 1967) spends his winters in Rome and summers at his family home near Lucca, Tuscany. In this 18th-century estate, which also served as his father’s studio, he began his career under his father’s guidance.

Ferroni belongs to a family of Tuscan artists with a lineagespanning centuries, and his family has left significant works of art throughout Rome, including frescoes and sculptures by his grandfather Leone and paintings by his father Riccardo (1934–2000) and uncle Marcello (1928–2008).

Narrative and Classical Influences

Ferroni’s work embodies the classical techniques and art historical knowledge he learned from his father. His paintings create a fantastical world inhabited by mythological, historical, and modern figures.

Although Ferroni’s style is rooted in the traditions of his ancestors, his work also includes contemporary elements, which add an ironic, modern perspective. With his background in Literature and Art History from the Sapienza University in Rome, he brings a profound, almost monumental quality to his work.

A Unique Friendship and First Choice

Hans Terbruggen was the primary collector of Ferroni’s work, owning over 100 pieces, from large canvases to intimate drawings. Between 1997 and 2008, Terbruggen and Ferroni developed a close friendship, with Terbruggen frequently traveling to Lucca to purchase works directly from the easel.

This exclusive access gave him first choice, making the Terbruggen Collection unique; it contains Ferroni’s finest works from over a decade.

Themes and Style: Myth and Reality

Ferroni’s paintings transport viewers to a world rich with mythological and historical motifs intertwined with contemporary elements. Art critic Donald Kuspit praises Ferroni for his tribute to the Italian art tradition, which he approaches not out of nostalgia but to stimulate the viewer’s imagination.

By placing contemporary icons, such as a speedboat or a man in jeans, in classical scenes, Ferroni creates a magical-realist atmosphere that makes his work unique in the modern art world.

Masterful Technique and Timeless Morality

Ferroni’s painting technique is rooted in the Old Masters, with subtle color contrasts and balanced compositions. Despite dynamic elements, he achieves a meditative tranquility in his works.

He bridges the morality of the ancient world with contemporary life, revealing that human desires have changed little over the centuries.
